Solar sail probe could improve detection of space tornadoes

A solar sail probe could improve early detection of dangerous "space tornadoes," according to researchers. These plasma and magnetic field spirals, called flux ropes, can disrupt Earth's magnetic field and cause geomagnetic storms, but current detection methods are insufficient. A constellation of spacecraft, including one using a solar sail, could provide the necessary multi-point observations for more accurate space weather warnings.
