Smartwatch app developed to support smoking cessation, researchers say

Researchers at the University of Bristol have developed a smartwatch app to help people quit smoking. The app detects hand movements associated with smoking using motion sensors on Android devices. When smoking movements are identified, the app sends a vibration alert and a supportive text message to the user. Messages include encouragement and a tally of cigarettes smoked that day. Participants can dismiss the message or access additional support from the UK National Health Service's smoking cessation resources through the app.
