Smallest asteroid ever measured confirmed after explosion over Niagara Falls
A new study confirms that asteroid 2022 WJ1, which exploded over Niagara Falls in November 2022, is the smallest asteroid ever measured, at just 20 inches wide. It was detected hours before its entry into Earth's atmosphere. The asteroid created a bright green fireball visible across southern Ontario and parts of the U.S. It disintegrated due to air friction, producing a loud sonic boom. Observations were made using advanced telescopes and meteor cameras. Despite expectations, no fragments of 2022 WJ1 have been recovered from Lake Ontario. Researchers continue to search for remnants to learn more about the asteroid's properties.
