Sipoo disables AI on student laptops after teachers report grade inflation

yle.fi (Swedish) —

The Finnish municipality of Sipoo will disable the AI tool Gemini on middle school student laptops starting November 1st, following teacher complaints about widespread cheating that has inflated final grades. Teachers reported an unsustainable situation within the first two weeks of the 2026-2027 school year, as Gemini could not be turned off on current devices. A staff survey showed nearly 50 of 61 respondents want the tool removed, with some teachers already reverting to pen and paper. The municipality is gradually replacing devices with Chromebooks, which allow disabling the AI, but the rollout may not finish until autumn 2027. Officials hope to eventually create a controlled exam system similar to Finland's Abitti platform for middle schools.
