Singapore court rejects CFO's $200,000 bonus claim over unmet requirements

A Singapore court dismissed a chief financial officer's claim for $200,000 in unpaid bonuses, ruling he had unilaterally reinterpreted his employer's specific requirements. The judge found Ngai Nai Ping Jango failed to deliver the exact seven worksheets stipulated as his bonus criteria. Ngai joined precision-engineering firm Banshing Industrial in November 2022 with a $20,000 monthly salary and a $100,000 annual bonus. His employment ended in January 2025, after which he sued for bonuses covering 2023 and 2024, arguing his own valuation model fulfilled the requirements and that the founder had assured payment. District Judge Jonathan Ng Pang Ern rejected the claims on Sept 1, noting Ngai admitted he knew more about valuation models than his manager. The judge also dismissed allegations of oral promises, saying Ngai provided no documentary evidence to support them.
