Shedd Aquarium unveils new centerpiece exhibit featuring expanded aquatic tanks
Shedd Aquarium has unveiled its new "Wonder of Water" centerpiece, replacing the Caribbean Reef. The updated exhibit features two kidney-shaped tanks, one saltwater and one freshwater, connected by a curved walkway. This change is part of a $250 million renovation set to finish in 2027. The previous Caribbean Reef tank, built in the 1970s, has been transformed to enhance visitor engagement and animal care. The new design includes a planned 175,000-gallon tank with an acrylic tunnel, expected to open in spring 2026, housing familiar sea creatures. The new exhibit emphasizes diverse aquatic habitats, showcasing vibrant corals and fish. The freshwater tank features a fiberglass tree trunk for fish habitat, highlighting the importance of contrasting ecosystems in maintaining overall aquatic health.
