Semi-Solid-State Batteries Hit Europe: 510 km Range at an Affordable Price
Chinese automaker MG Motor is bringing semi-solid-state batteries to Europe this year, offering electric vehicles with up to 510 kilometers of range at an affordable price, with 1,000 kilometers promised soon. The technology combines solid and liquid electrolyte components, surprising European researchers with its performance. The semi-solid-state battery retains five percent liquid content, making it flammable but allowing fast ion conduction and immediate operation even below freezing. European scientists had expected solid-state batteries to be fully solid and non-flammable, and did not anticipate such a significant leap in range from this hybrid approach. Chinese manufacturers prioritized practical, market-ready solutions over perfect technology, while European research remains more theoretical. The batteries are more complex to produce and not compatible with existing manufacturing lines, but they address two key consumer concerns: range anxiety and cost.
