Sea ice hit record low in March
March 2025 saw the lowest sea ice maximum extent ever recorded, based on 47 years of satellite data. Global temperatures for March were 1.6 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels. This marks the 20th of the last 21 months to exceed the preferred warming limit set by the Paris Agreement. The sea ice cover in March 2025 was 6% below average. The maximum sea ice extent was the lowest in the satellite record, falling below the previous low set in 2017. Furthermore, March 2025 was the warmest March on record for Europe. This follows other recent reports showing a worrying rise in global temperatures. This situation includes the fourth consecutive month of record low sea ice cover. Overall, 2025 had the second-warmest March on record.
