Scottish mezzo-soprano Beth Taylor releases debut album The Deeps Have Music
Scottish mezzo-soprano Beth Taylor has released her debut solo album, The Deeps Have Music, following her acclaimed Royal Opera House debut, positioning her on the brink of stardom. The album showcases her remarkably deep, powerful voice. The album is anchored by Edward Elgar's 1899 song cycle Sea Pictures, with pianist Hamish Brown providing a reduction of the original orchestration. Taylor's performance sets a new standard, and the album also features new works and pieces by undervalued women composers. Taylor, a 32-year-old from Glasgow, was a finalist at the 2023 Cardiff Singer of the World competition. Her voice, which sinks into contralto territory, is praised for its intelligence and phrasing, with the album offering varied perspectives on the sea.
