Scotland proposes new speed limits for cars and HGVs to improve road safety
New proposals in Scotland could lower speed limits for cars on single-carriageway roads from 60 mph to 50 mph, making them slower than heavy goods vehicles (HGVs). HGV speed limits would increase from 40 mph to 50 mph on single-carriageways and from 50 mph to 60 mph on dual-carriageways. Transport Scotland is conducting a National Speed Management Review to gather public feedback on these changes until March 5, 2025. The aim is to reduce risky overtaking and improve road safety, with officials emphasizing the importance of reducing road casualties. The proposed changes are part of a £36 million investment in road safety initiatives. Supporters, including the Road Haulage Association, believe the adjustments could enhance safety and reduce emissions while benefiting fuel efficiency for lorries.
