Scientists sequence plankton DNA to explore links to human biology
Scientists have sequenced the DNA of plankton for the first time, using new technology aboard sailing boats. This research aims to map 80% of the ocean's smallest creatures to better understand human biology and the health of the planet. The Ocean Genome Atlas Project, co-founded by Prof. Leonid Moroz, focuses on how marine organisms can inform medical advancements. The team can now analyze genetic data in real-time, a significant improvement from previous methods that took months. Sailing boats are more cost-effective and allow for precise work without vibrations. The project will continue in Patagonia, with plans to digitize findings for public access, contributing to marine biodiversity knowledge and potential biomedical solutions.
