Scientists Push Mammoth De-extinction to Early 2030s

obozrevatel.com (Ukrainian) —

Colossal Biosciences has delayed its timeline for resurrecting the woolly mammoth, with CEO Ben Lamm stating the animal will not be born until the early 2030s, later than the previously planned 2027 surrogate birth. The Dallas-based company discovered that converting an elephant nucleus into a mammoth one requires editing over 150 genes, not the roughly 60 initially estimated. This complexity exceeds that of the giant wolf, which the company successfully revived in 2025. Colossal has used AI and CRISPR technology to grow 38 woolly mice from mammoth genetic code. The research has also expanded genetic knowledge that could potentially improve human cancer resistance, though no exact birth date has been confirmed.
