Scientists discover hidden materials that boost batteries and solar energy

techno.nv.ua (Ukrainian) —

Scientists discovered previously unknown materials formed during intermediate stages of molecular heating, opening new possibilities for developing high-efficiency batteries and solar energy systems. The international team, led by Dr. Sebastian Pike from the University of Warwick, tracked chemical changes using specially designed single-source precursors. They identified a new kinetically stabilized form of bismuth vanadate (BiVO₄) with a unique atomic structure and wider band gap, enabling more efficient sunlight absorption for water splitting and clean hydrogen fuel production. Other intermediate phases showed remarkable lithium storage capacity, making them promising for next-generation battery technologies. The findings, published in Nature Communications, demonstrate that intermediate compounds are valuable materials in their own right, not just temporary reaction steps.
