Scientists have discovered a car-sized millipede, known as Arthropleura, that lived about 340 million years ago. This finding comes from two well-preserved fossils, revealing details about its head for the first time. Previously, experts could only speculate about its relationship to modern arthropods. The new research shows Arthropleura had a millipede-like body and a centipede-like head, featuring two short antennae and crab-like eyes. Advanced CT scanning techniques allowed researchers to study the fossils without damaging them. The fossils, collected in the 1980s from a French coal field, provide insights into the creature's appearance and lifestyle.
