Scientists 3D-print functional human islets for diabetes treatment

medicalxpress.com

Scientists have successfully 3D-printed functional human islets, potentially revolutionizing type 1 diabetes treatment by offering a less invasive option. This breakthrough was presented at the ESOT Congress 2025. The 3D-printed islets, created using a novel bioink, maintained function for up to three weeks and showed strong insulin responses. The new method allows for subcutaneous implantation, a less invasive alternative to traditional liver transplants. This new approach, using a bioink mimicking the pancreas's structure, could lead to an "off-the-shelf" diabetes treatment. Researchers are now testing the technology in animals and exploring long-term storage options.
