SBU suspects Kaplunov plotted to assassinate Ichkeria leader Zakayev

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) suspects Russian opposition figure Akhmed Zakayev, a leader of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, was the target of an assassination plot allegedly prepared by Russian Volunteer Corps (RDK) deputy commander Stepan Kaplunov. The SBU announced the foiled plot on September 2, the same day as a conflict with military intelligence (HUR). The attack was reportedly planned for Ukraine's Independence Day. On September 3, the SBU also accused Kaplunov of agreeing to assassinate Ukrainian military personnel. Kaplunov denies collaborating with Russian intelligence, claiming his confession was made under psychological pressure. The incident involved gunfire in Kyiv during a search of his apartment. President Zelenskyy called the clash disgraceful, while HUR's Timur unit commander accused SBU of kidnapping Kaplunov.
