SBU says Kaplunov plotted FSB-ordered assassination of Russian opposition figure in Ukraine

Ukraine's Security Service (SBU) announced on Thursday, September 3, that it uncovered contacts between Russian Volunteer Corps deputy commander Stepan Kaplunov and Russian intelligence services, alleging he was tasked with preparing an assassination of a Russian opposition leader in Ukraine. The SBU stated the killing, ordered by Russia's FSB, was planned for Ukraine's Independence Day and that Kaplunov also received assignments to target other Ukrainian defense forces personnel in exchange for money. The service claims Kaplunov admitted to FSB contacts, which were also found on his phone, and that a "preventive measure" was applied. Kaplunov told NV he confessed under duress after days of interrogations, denying any real cooperation with the FSB. The SBU acknowledged an "unacceptable conflict" leading to a shooting during investigative actions, now probed by the State Bureau of Investigation. President Zelenskyy called the incident "absolutely shameful," prompting personnel decisions.
