Analysis of asteroid Ryugu samples revealed nitrogen compounds concentrated around soluble salt crystals, indicating concentrated brine existed on its parent body. This suggests evaporation concentrated reactive substances, potentially promoting formation of life's building blocks. Findings published in Nature Astronomy on August 27, 2026. Researchers used X-rays and infrared on Hayabusa2-returned samples, finding nitrates, ammonia, and nitrogen-rich organics near sodium carbonate and halite crystals. As water froze or evaporated on the parent body, salts precipitated from remaining brine, highly concentrating nitrogen compounds. Amino acids and nucleobases were previously found in Ryugu samples, with ammonia playing a key role in their synthesis. Similar brine environments may exist on other water-rich bodies like dwarf planet Ceres, offering clues about how life's ingredients formed beyond Earth.
