Russian scientists dissected a well-preserved baby mammoth, nicknamed "Yana", on March 27 in Yakutsk. The female mammoth, found in permafrost, dates back over 130,000 years. This significantly precedes prior estimates of its age, which were around 50,000 years. The partially-eaten mammoth weighed approximately 397 pounds. The examination showed the remains were well-preserved despite the earlier predation, especially the head and trunk. It was about a year old when it died. Though rare, this discovery follows other recent mammoth findings. A mammoth bone was found in Poland in June 2024, and a tusk fragment was discovered in Mississippi in August 2024.
