Russia expands shadow tanker fleet to bypass energy sanctions
Russia continues to evade international sanctions on its energy exports, using a fleet of shadow tankers. A recent report indicates that Russia has invested over $10 billion in this fleet, which has nearly doubled its oil exports to 4.1 million barrels per day. The U.S., EU, and other nations imposed sanctions in 2022 to pressure Russia over its invasion of Ukraine. However, tracking Russian oil through complex supply chains has proven challenging, allowing Russia to maintain significant export levels despite restrictions. In response to these developments, the U.K. has sanctioned ten ships linked to Russia's oil operations. Experts warn that the use of older tankers poses environmental risks, with potential for major disasters if not addressed.
