Russia has declared Memorial an extremist organization, making collaboration illegal and exposing supporters to prosecution. The Supreme Court's decision follows years of crackdowns on dissent, with Memorial previously dissolved in 2021. Novaya Gazeta's offices were raided and a journalist arrested. Both organizations have documented human rights violations in Russia since the Soviet era. Novaya Gazeta's editor won a Nobel Peace Prize in 2021.
