Rome extends free air-conditioned cinemas and libraries through August 14

Rome has extended its "Il Grande Freddo" initiative, offering free access to air-conditioned cinemas and libraries until August 14, 2026, to help residents cope with the ongoing heatwave. The program, originally scheduled through August 4, was prolonged due to persistently high temperatures expected to last until mid-August. Over 20,000 people have already used the free spaces, which include nine cinemas, eleven libraries, and cultural venues like the Teatro Argentina and Palazzo delle Esposizioni. Participating libraries distribute free water from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., though several will close temporarily before August 14. Mayor Roberto Gualtieri emphasized the initiative's role in protecting vulnerable citizens, while culture councilor Massimiliano Smeriglio highlighted culture as a form of welfare and social connection.
