Romania's first PESA electric trains enter service on Bucharest-Constanta route

Romania's first PESA electric trains will enter service on Thursday, August 6, after months of inactivity. The first unit will operate on the Bucharest North-Constanta route. The initial train will serve Regio 8011 departing Bucharest at 06:17 and Regio 8010 returning from Constanta at 14:20. Only one regional electric unit will be used initially, with more PESA trains planned for CFR Calatori and private operator Transferoviar Calatori. The trains were delayed due to unresolved maintenance facility obligations from Polish manufacturer PESA. Acting Transport Minister Radu Miruta said last week the issue was nearly resolved, with the state withholding payments for unmet contractual duties. The trains are part of a January 2024 contract for 62 regional electric trains funded by the EU Modernisation Fund, plus 20 interregional units and nine additional trains contracted in 2025.
