Romania adopts Montreux Document on private military and security companies
The Montreux Document, adopted in 2008, outlines pertinent legal obligations and best practices for states regarding private military and security companies during armed conflicts. It is not a legally binding treaty but aims to guide state conduct. The document resulted from a joint initiative by Switzerland and the International Committee of the Red Cross, with four intergovernmental meetings held between 2006 and 2008. It serves as a framework for regulating private military and security company operations. Romania officially adopted the Montreux Document on September 21, 2023, becoming the 59th signatory state. This action signifies Romania's commitment to the principles and guidelines outlined in the document.
