Rio's metro fare rises to R$7.90, highest nationally

Starting today, Saturday, April 12, 2025, the Rio de Janeiro metro fare increases to R$7.90, making it the most expensive in Brazil. This is a 5.33% increase. The fare hike, from R$7.50, is contractually obligated and approved by the transport regulatory agency, Agetransp, based on the IPCA inflation index. This increase has drawn criticism from users, especially when compared to other cities like São Paulo, where the fare is R$5.20. The metro company attributes the high fare to a lack of subsidies, unlike other cities. Protests occurred during a recent event, and a state audit is questioning the index used for fare adjustments.
