Researchers Uncover Massive Surveillance Operation Targeting Starlink Users
Researchers have uncovered evidence of a massive surveillance operation targeting Starlink users, with an Israeli advertising firm linked to spyware delivery identified as the top bidder for Starlink ad impressions in 105 countries. The findings suggest possible surveillance interest in countries where Starlink is banned or restricted. Discover-Tech, previously connected to zero-click spyware delivery, placed about 3.77 billion bids and won roughly 442 million auctions from March to June 2026, spending $109,000 with no conversions. Its ads reached networks associated with NATO, the U.S. Department of Defense, and the International Criminal Court, prompting Google to terminate its access. TrendAI's analysis showed the entity captured over 80% of Starlink ad wins in Argentina, the Philippines, and Japan, with dominance in sanctioned states like Syria and Yemen. Researchers linked this to Discover-Tech, noting the real-time bidding process shares detailed device and location data, enabling tracking without compromising Starlink's infrastructure.
