Republican lawmaker Adrian Smith opposes Trump's tariff strategy on trade issues
Republican Rep. Adrian Smith, the top member of the Ways and Means trade subcommittee, expressed his opposition to President Trump's use of tariffs. He stated he is "not a huge fan" of the recent tariffs imposed on Canada, Mexico, and China. Trump recently enacted a 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico, citing a "drug war," but temporarily suspended it after discussions with their leaders. A 10% tariff on China took effect, leading to retaliatory tariffs against U.S. goods. Smith raised concerns about the impact of retaliatory tariffs on American farmers and emphasized the need for temporary measures. He praised Trump's efforts in negotiating the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Trade Agreement but criticized the previous Biden administration's market engagement.
