Renewed Gaza airstrikes kill over 500, including children
The recent airstrikes in Gaza have led to significant casualties, with reports indicating hundreds have been killed since the attacks resumed on Tuesday. The violence comes after a ceasefire that had been in place since January broke down. This renewal of conflict has coincided with an already weakened population, which has endured 15 months of war triggered by Hamas’s attack on Israel in October 2023. UNRWA's senior deputy field director in Gaza, Sam Rose, stated the situation is "worse this time." He noted that people are exhausted and facing severe challenges including poor mental health and malnutrition. Children who had just returned to school after a long absence are now in tents, constantly fearful of bombardments. Rose described the ongoing trauma as "fear on top of fear and tragedy on top of tragedy." Photojournalists are actively documenting the harsh realities faced by the people in Gaza. According to the enclave's civil defense agency, over 500 people have been killed since Tuesday, with a significant number being minors. As families mourn their losses, many are searching through rubble for their belongings after their homes have been destroyed. Displaced individuals are moving from one area to another, trying to escape the violence as the situation remains dire across the region.
