Reducing inflammation protects against age-related macular degeneration

Reducing chronic inflammation can protect against age-related macular degeneration (AMD)-like retinal damage in preclinical models. University of Minnesota researchers found that removing key inflammation components prevented immune cell infiltration and deposit formation, hallmarks of early retinal disease. This approach targets early protection rather than late-stage treatment. AMD is a leading cause of vision loss in older Americans. This research, published in Cell Death and Disease, may lead to new preventive treatments for AMD by targeting the inflammasome pathway.
