Record heat-related deaths and extreme drought impact global health in 2023 report
A new report from the Lancet Countdown reveals record levels of heat-related deaths and health threats due to climate change in 2023. Extreme drought affected 48% of global land, and heat-related deaths among those over 65 surged by 167% compared to the 1990s. The report highlights that people experienced 50 more days of dangerous temperatures this year. Food insecurity rose, impacting 151 million more individuals, while sleep loss increased by 6% compared to historical averages. Despite these alarming trends, global carbon dioxide emissions reached an all-time high in 2023, with fossil fuels making up 80.3% of energy sources. Experts emphasize that climate change poses immediate health risks, affecting populations worldwide.
