Real von Trapp children from The Sound of Music led varied lives after fleeing Austria
The real von Trapp family, featured in "The Sound of Music," had ten children, not seven. They fled Austria during the Nazi invasion and later found success as singers in the U.S. The family included Rupert, Agathe, Maria, Werner, Hedwig, Johanna, Martina, Rosmarie, Eleonore, and Johannes. Rupert pursued a medical career and passed away in 1992. Agathe, who lived until 2010, ran a kindergarten and published a book about her family's story. Maria lived to 99, while Werner, Hedwig, Johanna, and Martina also had varied lives, with some tragically passing young. Rosmarie died in 2022, Eleonore in 2021, and Johannes, now 85, is the last surviving sibling. He shared insights about their rigorous musical training and their mother's strong leadership in the family.
