Rare turtles rescued in Scotland and Jersey released in Azores

Three rare loggerhead turtles rescued in UK waters have been flown 1,600 miles to the Azores for release after rehabilitation. The creatures, named Crush, Eden, and Tiree, were found distressed and suffering from cold shock off Scotland and Jersey. Crush was discovered lifeless on a Jersey beach in January, while Eden was found in Troon in October 2025 and Tiree on the island west of Mull in November. All received specialist care at Sea Life centres in Weymouth, Brighton, Loch Lomond, and Blackpool before being deemed fit for release. Loggerhead turtles are classified as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, with an estimated 2,000 breeding females worldwide and only one in 100 hatchlings surviving to adulthood. Sea Life Brighton opened the UK's first permanent turtle rehabilitation centre in 2024.
