Rare prehistoric cave art discovered in France

Researchers have uncovered ancient cave art in a remote cave in southwestern France. Known as the Grotte de Cussac, this cave contains carvings of animals like horses, mammoths, and rhinoceroses that date back about 30,000 years. The cave was first discovered in 2000 by an amateur explorer, and access is normally restricted to a few researchers each year. A team of journalists recently visited the site for the first time. They wore protective clothing and followed strict cleaning protocols to prevent damage to the fragile artwork. The cave is often compared to the famous Lascaux caves, which were closed to the public in 1963 to protect their frescoes from damage. The Grotte de Cussac stretches about 1.6 kilometers and features over 1,000 carvings. These include not only images of animals but also stylized female forms. Archaeologists believe the artwork was created by people from the Gravettian culture in Europe. The cave appears to have been sealed shortly after it was occupied, helping preserve its contents. Inside, researchers found signs of cave bears alongside six human remains, indicating that the site was used for both burials and artistic expression. The lead archaeologist suggests the cave was a sanctuary for rituals and ceremonies, possibly marking important life passages. The carvings were made using tools from flint, wood, and bone. Experts are using modern technology, like 3D imaging, to learn more about these ancient artworks and their meanings. Although not fully explored, the cave was designated a historic monument in 2002. Authorities are focused on preserving the site while also sharing its story. A recent exhibition in a nearby town featured reproductions of the artwork, but the cave itself remains closed to the public for protection.
