Ram sales decline as New Zealand sheep farmers face financial challenges
Ram sales are expected to decline this year as sheep farmers face financial difficulties. Wairere Rams, New Zealand's largest Romney stud, has reduced its ram offering from 2,600 to 1,800 due to a lack of profits in 2023.
Derek Daniell, the principal of Wairere Rams, noted that many farmers experienced substantial losses last year. He anticipates selling 30 percent fewer rams this season, with prices remaining similar to last year.
Farmers are prioritizing cash flow, leading to reduced purchases. While demand for quality genetics remains, many are cutting back on the number of rams they buy. The ram-selling season runs from October to December.
