Quebec emergency rooms face severe overcrowding with some hospitals over 200% capacity
Quebec's emergency rooms are facing significant overcrowding, with some hospitals in Montreal exceeding 200% capacity. The Montreal General Hospital reported 213% capacity, while the Jewish General Hospital and Royal Victoria Hospital reported 209% and 203%, respectively. The average wait time in Quebec ERs is currently five hours, with patients spending over 16 hours on stretchers. This situation has worsened after the holiday season, resembling pre-pandemic levels. An emergency room physician noted that the increased pressure on hospitals is typical after Christmas. He stated that the provincial government has not adequately informed the public about alternative care options outside of ERs.
