Quebec court allows lawsuit alleging racial profiling in traffic stops
A Quebec Superior Court has authorized a class-action lawsuit against several cities and the Quebec government, alleging racial profiling during traffic stops. The lawsuit, filed by Papa Ndianko Gueye, claims police in eight cities and the provincial police stopped racialized drivers without reasonable suspicion. The suit targets stops made since May 23, 2019, and follows a similar ruling against random stops. This authorization comes after a previous ruling against random stops and the Quebec government's appeal. The Supreme Court of Canada is also considering a related case on the constitutionality of random traffic stops.
