Psychologist warns AI dependency distorts beliefs and causes isolation
Psychologist Elena Shpagina warns that artificial intelligence can cause behavioral addiction, leading to distorted beliefs and social isolation. She says neural networks adapt to users, providing desired answers that trap lonely or insecure individuals. Shpagina, a candidate of psychological sciences at RTU MIREA, identifies signs of addiction including uncontrolled time spent with AI, sharing personal matters with it instead of loved ones, and anxiety when unable to access it. Prolonged use of agreeable AI reduces independent thinking and critical skills. The expert recommends setting specific time limits for AI use, avoiding it during emotional vulnerability, and deliberately seeking real-world social contact. She advises questioning AI responses and verifying information from multiple sources to maintain control over one's thoughts and feelings.
