Prosecutor seeks defendant's lawyer communications in murder case
The prosecutor in the Karen Read murder case is asking for messages between Read and her lawyer. This comes after the prosecutor claimed that Read has given up her right to keep those communications private. Karen Read, 45, is charged with killing her boyfriend, John O’Keefe, in a car accident. O’Keefe, a Boston police officer, was struck by Read’s car during a snowstorm. After a trial last year ended in a mistrial, she is set to be retried on April 1. Special prosecutor Hank Brennan wants all texts, emails, or written messages between Read and her lawyer, David Yannetti, that were sent between January 29, 2022, and February 2, 2022. He argues that Read has made her thoughts about the incident public in interviews, which means those communications are no longer confidential. Brennan backed up his request by referencing specific interviews and a recent documentary about the case. He has also asked for all unedited footage from the documentary, stating that the access given to the defense team was unusual. This story is still developing.
