Production designer recreates iconic SNL stage for new film 'Saturday Night'
The film "Saturday Night," directed by Jason Reitman, depicts the 90 minutes leading up to the first live episode of "Saturday Night Live" in 1975. Production designer Jess Gonchor recreated the iconic stage, using vintage lighting and real bricks to capture the era's feel. Gonchor sourced rare lighting equipment and cranes for authenticity. The set design included elements like seats from Yankee Stadium, which were borrowed for the original show. The construction process took 12 weeks, starting with a scaled model. The film highlights the teamwork among the cast as they rush to complete the set. Gonchor's design choices reflect the challenges and creativity of the original production team.
