Prisoner found guilty of murdering fellow inmate in Mountjoy Prison attack

David Dunne, 40, was found guilty of murdering fellow inmate Robert O’Connor at Mountjoy Prison on July 29, 2022. The jury took less than three hours to reach a unanimous verdict after considering Dunne's claim of self-defense. O’Connor suffered multiple blunt-force injuries, primarily to his head, consistent with stamping and kicking. He was pronounced dead on August 1, 2022, after being hospitalized. Dunne will be sentenced to life imprisonment on December 16. The court heard that O’Connor had been assaulted by other inmates shortly before entering Dunne's cell. CCTV footage captured the fatal attack, which involved multiple blows to O’Connor's head. Dunne's defense argued the act was unintentional and reactive.
