Prado Museum highlights Antonio Rafael Mengs's Neoclassical art

The Prado Museum is showcasing the work of Antonio Rafael Mengs, a pivotal figure in Spanish Neoclassicism. Mengs, once hailed as the greatest artist of his time, influenced European painting and theory. His career, marked by a friendship with Winckelmann and later a falling out, saw him serve as court painter to Charles III of Spain. The exhibition features 159 works, including paintings, drawings, and decorative pieces, highlighting his contributions to religious art, portraiture, and muralism, and his intellectual impact on subsequent generations of artists.
