Portuguese milk price cuts to cost producers €72 million this year

Portuguese milk producers will lose approximately 72 million euros this year due to price cuts, according to an estimate from the Aprolep association. The reductions began in August and extend through December. The August cut of 1.5 cents per liter represents 12 million euros in losses, adding to 60 million euros from a three-cent reduction compared to 2025. Cooperatives cited market conditions, including powdered milk prices and aggressive promotions, while producers face rising fertilizer and energy costs. The average milk price fell to 0.447 euros per kilogram in June, the lowest level this year, down from 0.465 euros in January. Aprolep criticized government aid as insufficient and awaits a response on production costs and French milk imports.
