Portugal records nine measles cases; virologist urges vigilance, not alarm

Portugal has recorded nine measles cases since the start of the year, according to the Directorate-General of Health, prompting a virologist to call it a vigilance signal rather than an uncontrolled outbreak. Virologist Pedro Simas stated most cases involve unvaccinated individuals or foreign imports, emphasizing that Portugal's high vaccination coverage remains the main defense. He reassured parents that vaccinated children are protected even if exposed. Measles is highly contagious and transmitted through respiratory droplets, with risks including pneumonia and brain inflammation. The VASPR vaccine, given at 12 months and 5 years, offers nearly 97% protection and is free under Portugal's national program.
