Portugal public sector strike disrupts schools and services; easyJet walkout cancels flights

rtp.pt (Portuguese) —

A nationwide strike by Portuguese public sector workers is disrupting schools, public services, and waste collection on Friday, affecting approximately 350,000 employees. The 24-hour walkout, called by the CGTP union, is also impacting airports due to a separate five-day strike by easyJet cabin crew. The public sector strike covers general career workers, including senior technicians and operational assistants. Unions are demanding immediate career progression, recognition of professional specificities, and the start of salary negotiations, arguing that low wages stem from government policy. The education sector is among the hardest hit, with some schools closed, while health services may also face constraints. The easyJet cabin crew strike, running until October 6, has already led to the cancellation of 80 percent of flights, with 443 flights canceled across Lisbon, Porto, and Faro. The union accuses the company of illegally replacing striking crew and interfering with strike rights. Further strike days are planned for December 19-23.
