Port Adelaide bar faces closure over noise complaint

The owner of a Port Adelaide cafe and bar fears his business may close due to a single noise complaint. Adrian Galindo runs Milledges Distillation, which has faced challenges since a local resident filed a complaint in April 2024. Galindo and his wife, who own the family business, have spent over $50,000 addressing the issue. They hoped to resolve the complaint but say their efforts have not succeeded. Galindo expressed his distress, saying the situation has brought them to tears at times. The complaint was initially handled by South Australia's Consumer and Business Services and later referred to the Licensing Court. The complainant also approached the local council about the noise in October 2024. Galindo has invested in $40,000 of soundproofing measures, including noise suppressing doors and improved sound systems. Despite these efforts, he claims the council has suggested further structural changes that could cost up to $250,000 and would require the venue to close temporarily. In addition to the renovation costs, Galindo has already spent about $10,000 on legal fees. He believes these financial burdens could lead to the closure of Milledges Distillation. The City of Port Adelaide Enfield council stated they are working with both parties to address concerns about the venue's compliance with its liquor license. They emphasized that the business has not faced restrictions and they support its ongoing operation, but the matter is still before the Licensing Court. A directions hearing is scheduled for April 8, 2025.
