Poll finds 72% of Britons say Burnham's electricity VAT cut won't ease household bills

Poll finds 72% of Britons say Andy Burnham's flagship VAT cut on household electricity bills will make little difference to their finances, a setback. The £850m tax cut abolishes VAT on electricity from October, saving households about £45 yearly. Support was strongest among young people; 39% of under-35s said it would help, versus 6% of over-50s. More than half of voters favoured unfreezing the £12,570 personal allowance, but the IFS estimates that could cost £8.5–9bn annually, making it difficult given finances.
