Police arrest two over P6.5-M smuggled cigarettes off Zamboanga City

Two men were arrested Thursday over P6.5 million worth of smuggled cigarettes seized from a motorized boat off Zamboanga City, Philippine police announced Friday. The Philippine National Police said personnel intercepted the vessel near Layag-Layag Island. The two suspects, residents of Barangay Rio Hondo, failed to show transport documents; authorities recovered 2,182 reams of Cannon, Berlin, and Bravo cigarettes. Police chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. ordered intensified sea patrols to target smuggling financiers and organizers. The suspects, seized cigarettes, and boat remain in police custody.
