The Philippine National Police ordered tighter coastal patrols after intercepting a motorized boat carrying about P6.5 million in suspected smuggled cigarettes off Zamboanga City. Police chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez directed maritime units to intensify seaborne patrols, target smugglers, and file cases against financiers and organizers. Two suspects were arrested Thursday after failing to present shipping documents. The boat carried 2,182 reams of cigarette brands including Cannon, Berlin, and Bravo. Police coordinated with customs for inventory and said smuggling undermines businesses and government revenue.
