Pink noise bursts during sleep may boost brain waste clearance
MIT researchers have shown that delivering short bursts of "pink noise" during sleep can strengthen cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) waves, potentially enhancing brain waste clearance. This finding offers a new method to improve restorative sleep and may impact neurodegenerative disease research. The study, published in Science Translational Medicine, involved 14 healthy volunteers. Researchers used a rapid EEG processing algorithm to time 50-millisecond pink noise bursts precisely at slow wave peaks, increasing both electrical and CSF wave amplitude during non-REM sleep. The team now plans to test this technology in clinical populations, including people with insomnia or Alzheimer's disease. A startup is developing a home-use headband device, with funding from multiple institutions including the NIH.
