Physician Dr. Kunal Sood explained that sharp chest pain, especially when breathing deeply, is often caused by costochondritis, an inflammation where ribs meet the breastbone. This condition, unrelated to the heart, causes pain due to rib movement during respiration. The pain can also worsen with coughing, sneezing, or lifting. Pressing on the painful area typically reproduces the discomfort. While usually benign, severe or unexplained chest pain with other symptoms requires prompt medical evaluation.
